About the project

Designing equitable access to care

AltaMed’s digital presence needed to reflect the scale of its mission while making care easier to access for diverse, bilingual communities. The existing website was not responsive, difficult to navigate, and created barriers for patients trying to find doctors, understand eligibility, or access services on the go.

The goal of the redesign was to deliver a modern, mobile first experience that prioritized clarity, trust, and inclusion across English and Spanish audiences. A core focus was establishing a cross cultural digital experience supported by persistent language access and simplified care finding tools.

Structure and flow

The experience was reimagined through close collaboration between product design and UX strategy. Personas representing patients, caregivers, and potential members helped guide decisions around hierarchy, navigation, and content prioritization.

A revised sitemap simplified the architecture and emphasized high value actions such as finding care, checking eligibility, and locating clinics. Wireframes and early prototypes were used to validate these pathways and ensure the experience remained intuitive across devices.

Establishing the Visual System

The visual direction for AltaMed focused on balancing credibility, warmth, and inclusivity. The interface used generous spacing, approachable typography, and a fresh color system that extended the brand’s palette while maintaining accessibility contrast standards.

Photography and illustration played a key role in humanizing the experience, showing real patients and providers from the communities AltaMed serves. These elements helped convey a sense of belonging, care, and trust, reinforcing the organization’s mission visually as well as functionally.

To ensure cohesion across both English and Spanish versions of the site, a comprehensive design system was built with scalable UI components and bilingual content patterns. The site achieved full 508 compliance, plain spoken language for greater accessibility, and mobile first performance. Interactive prototypes demonstrated motion design and microinteractions, from transitions within the Find a Doctor feature to the language toggle behavior, helping teams visualize responsiveness and tone.

Delivering a Unified Experience

The redesigned platform delivered a cohesive, inclusive experience that made care easier to access and understand. Key workflows became faster and more intuitive, while bilingual support and accessibility improvements strengthened trust with AltaMed’s communities.

As an ongoing retainer engagement, the site continued to evolve through iterative enhancements informed by research and feedback. Engagement with educational content increased following launch, and the platform now serves as a scalable, human centered foundation that supports AltaMed’s mission of equitable healthcare access.
